Looking after your roof tent
A roof tent lives outside and gets wet. A few habits keep it in good shape. Always follow the maker's manual where it differs. TODO align with the maker's manual once we have it.
Dry it before you pack it
Packing a wet tent is the main cause of mould and smells. If you have to close it wet in the morning, open it again as soon as you can and let it dry fully. In the UK that often means a dry hour at home on the drive.
Let it breathe
Every tent gets condensation. Leave vents open at night when the weather allows, and wipe the inside in the morning if it is damp.
Clean it gently
- Use lukewarm water, a mild soap and a soft brush.
- Avoid bleach, strong detergents and pressure washers. They can damage the fabric's coating.
- Rinse well and let it dry fully before closing.
Check it before each trip
- The tent's mounting bolts are tight and the bars have not moved.
- The latches close firmly and the ladder locks.
- Zips and seams look sound.
Wind and weather
Check the forecast. In strong wind, close the tent and sleep in the car or at a campsite instead. Do not exceed the sleeping capacity.
Storage
If you take the tent off for the winter, store it dry, off the ground and out of direct sun.
