Where can you use a roof tent in the UK?
The short answer: wherever you are allowed to camp, with the owner's permission. Rules differ across the UK and change, so check locally before you go.
Campsites
The simplest option. Most campsites take roof tents on a normal pitch, but some limit them to certain pitches or ask you to say in advance. A quick message when you book avoids surprises.
Small certificated and farm sites
Many farms and clubs offer small, quiet pitches. Booking sites such as Pitchup and Hipcamp list them, and the camping clubs run certificated sites for members. Ask each site whether a vehicle-mounted tent is fine.
Wild camping
In England and Wales you need the landowner's permission to camp, wherever you are. Scotland's access rights cover lightweight camping on foot and do not generally cover camping from a vehicle, so ask the landowner or use a site. Always follow local signs and leave no trace.
Roads, lay-bys and car parks
Do not set up on a public road or in a lay-by. Many beach and council car parks ban overnight stays and sleeping in vehicles; the signs and byelaws tell you. If you are unsure, pick a campsite.
Before you go
- Confirm the site allows roof tents.
- Check the forecast and your vehicle's roof limit.
- Take your own water, and leave the pitch as you found it.
